A one-bedroom villa behind a single gate is normally covered by four points: the entrance, parking, the pool terrace and the service path at the back. A two-storey family home with staff quarters lands at six to eight, and only multi-building compounds genuinely justify twelve or more. Every extra camera is another lens to clean after the rains, another cable run and another channel filling the recorder, so we plan from sightlines first and count second.
Wiring decides reliability. For permanent installs we favour PoE: one network cable carries both power and video, survives router restarts and does not care how many guests are streaming on the villa Wi-Fi. Wireless units have their place on rentals where drilling is off the table, but behind Bali's concrete walls and a crowded 2.4 GHz band they are the first thing to drop offline. Recording is a similar fork — a local NVR stores footage on site with no monthly fee and keeps working through internet outages, while cloud plans earn their keep as a second copy for owners managing the property from abroad. Most of our clients run a local recorder plus phone viewing, and where there is a doorphone or automatic gate we tie the camera layout into it before any cable goes in.
One spec that gets overlooked: in tropical light, sensor size and infrared reach matter more than megapixels. An 8 MP camera built on a tiny sensor gives noisy, smeared night footage in heavy rain, while a solid 4 MP unit with a larger matrix and honest IR reads a face at the gate at 2 a.m. If budget forces a choice, put the money into optics and night performance, not resolution numbers.
