IP vs Analog CCTV – Which for Your Bali Villa?

A practical comparison for Bali villa owners choosing or upgrading their CCTV system.

Once a villa owner asked me if his 2013 analog system needed replacing or just upgrading. The system had 8 cameras, all running on intact coax cable, recording to a DVR that still worked but had no remote view capability. The cameras were 700TVL — below the resolution useful for face recognition at the distances they were shooting. The most cost-effective path was HD-TVI cameras and a new DVR using the existing cable — not a full IP replacement. Understanding the difference between IP and analog, and the hybrid options between them, is the starting point for making a good decision.

Standard Analog CCTV

Original analog CCTV transmits video as composite analog signal over coaxial cable. Maximum resolution is approximately 700TVL — the equivalent of roughly 0.4MP in digital terms. No remote view on standard analog systems without additional network encoders. Recording on DVR (Digital Video Recorder). Most 2005–2015 Bali villa installs are this type.

Should you keep it? Only if the cameras are high-resolution and the recording works well. Original SD analog cameras are below the resolution threshold for useful incident investigation and should be upgraded.

HD Analog (HD-TVI / HD-CVI / HD-AHD)

A hybrid technology that transmits HD video over standard coaxial cable. HD-TVI (Hikvision standard) and HD-CVI (Dahua standard) both support 1080p, 4MP, and 4K resolution on existing coax. DVR supports remote view via smartphone app. This is the correct choice when existing coax is intact — significant cost saving over full IP replacement. Most 2015–2020 Bali installs are or should be this type.

Full IP CCTV

Video transmitted as network data over CAT6 Ethernet cable. Each camera has an IP address. Supports 4K, smart analytics (person/vehicle detection), remote PTZ control, and full integration with smart home systems. Recording on NVR. Higher capability ceiling; higher installation cost due to new cabling requirement if not replacing an existing IP system. Best for new construction or where HD analog isn't sufficient for the requirement.

The Practical Recommendation

Existing coax in good condition: upgrade to HD-TVI or HD-CVI. No existing cable or IP-specific requirements: install full IP. Tight budget with recent HD analog: keep cameras, replace DVR for remote view. The right answer is based on your existing infrastructure and specific requirements — not a general preference for the newest technology.
